Principles of Human Physiology

34 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials. Semester 1.

Available to level 2 occupational therapy students; in Townsville, with approval of the head of physiology and pharmacology, any student with an interest in physiology.

This subject provides an introduction to human physiology and describes the function and structure of the human organ systems. This includes an introduction to cells and tissues; the skin; the nervous, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, reproductive systems and endocrinology.

Learning Objectives:

  1. overall body structure and organisation;
  2. cell and tissue structure and classification;
  3. the role of blood constituents and lymph in the body;
  4. functional and structural aspects of the nervous, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, reproductive and endocrine systems.

Assessment by three-hour end of semester examination (70%); assignments (30%).
