Medical Physiology 2

36 hours lectures, 24 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Available to any students with an interest in physiology, excluding Nursing Science and Pharmacy students.

This subject builds on fundamental concepts introduced in PP2101 and describes the structure and function of the human organ systems not covered in PP2101 . This includes the respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine and reproductive systems. An introduction to nutrition and physiological adaptations of organ systems to changes in environmental or metabolic demands is also included. This knowledge is essential for careers in health related areas, human biomedical research and drug research and development.

Learning Objectives:

  1. functional and structural aspects of the respiratory system; renal system; endocrine system; reproductive system; gastrointestinal system;
  2. basic concepts of human nutrition and metabolic regulation.

Assessment by one three-hour examination at the end of semester (70%); laboratory work/reports (30%).
