Professional Pharmacy Placement 1

Townsville HECS Band 2

6 hours lectures, 4 hours workshops, 240 hours other. Semester 1.

Available to level 3 Bachelor of Pharmacy students.

The subject will provide a minimum of 225 hours (six weeks at 37.5 hours) of supervised clinical pharmacy placement with flexible support from the University to integrate and develop previously learnt material with new observational and practical clinical training.

The placement will be either rural or urban (hospital, community or industry) at an advanced level and will enable the student to apply, develop, analyse and integrate the theories, principles and practice of pharmacy in a variety of settings.

Students may be required to undertake clinical placement in a facility away from the campus at which they are currently enrolled, at their own expense.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop the skills to obtain a pharmaceutical history, including a patient’s medication and medical history;
  2. develop individual objectives for one’s own professional development;
  3. develop individual aims of intervention and outcomes of practice for patients that present to the pharmacy;
  4. appreciate the principles of human resource management of pharmacy (hospital or community);
  5. demonstrate competent skills in self directed learning.

Assessment by clinical placement performance report (pass/fail); attendance record (pass/fail); placement assignment (30%); oral presentation of assignment (10%); placement workbook (60%). Satisfactory performance in all aspects of the subject is required to pass. This is defined as at least 50% on all sections of the course. Attendance at placements is compulsory.
