Introduction to Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy.

This subject is a continuation of PC1004 . The student will be introduced to the importance of effective written communication in the practice of pharmacy and the special needs of certain groups in this regard. An introduction to finding pharmaceutical resources, data management and statistical analysis will be provided.
Students will also develop an understanding of the systems of weights and measures, equipment, calculations and techniques used in preparation of extemporaneous pharmaceutical formulations. The packaging, labelling, transportation and storage of pharmaceuticals, outlining the unique needs of rural and remote areas will be explored.
Learning Objectives:
- a knowledge of available pharmaceutical resources in the library and world wide web and how to access them;
- demonstrate practical extemporaneous dispensing and the related written and verbal communication skills;
- demonstrate an understanding of basic statistics and data analysis, including an ability to recognise when particular techniques are appropriate;
- discuss the appropriate packaging, labelling, transportation and storage of pharmaceuticals;
- outline the principles of pharmaceutics;
- outline the principles of basic pharmacokinetics and its application to professional pharmacy practice.
Assessment by a three-hour examination (60%); laboratory attendance, examination and reports (20%) – this is composed of 4% for four practical write-ups, 4% for the pre-practical examination (2% semester 1 and 2% semester 2) and 12% for the practical examination in semester 2; pharmaceutics assignment (20%). A satisfactory performance in all aspects of the subject is required. This is defined as at least 60% in the dispensing practical examination and all laboratory reports and at least 50% for all other sections of the course. Attendance at practicals is compulsory.
