Intensive Care Nursing 1

40 hours flexible delivery plus a minimum employment of 0.6 FTE in an appropriate clinical facility is required for the duration of the subject, or as negotiated with the course coordinator. Semester 1.

This subject explores the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required by registered nurses when caring for patients in the intensive care unit. Content includes managing the physical and psychosocial needs for patients with complex health care problems, clinical problem-solving and introduction to technological interventions. Competency-based clinical assessment will occur during the clinical practice component of the subject.

Learning Objectives:

  1. apply knowledge and skills to implement and evaluate contemporary intensive care nursing practice in relation to patient and family-centred care;
  2. critically assess and monitor intensive care patients within the context of a technological environment;
  3. apply a problem-solving approach to plan and implement individualised nursing care for critically ill patients.
