Midwifery Practice 2

Townsville HECS Band 1

200 hours clinical placement. A 5-day residential learning school at commencement of Semester 2. Limited attendance.

This subject integrates a number of perspectives from which midwifery practice draws. The modular learning structure includes issues related to the postpartum woman and family, lactation, the normal neonate. Situation-based learning is applied to this subject and some perinatal challenges are discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. apply knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate contemporary midwifery practice in relation to the birthing family;
  2. utilise critical thinking and problem solving skills to explore issues pertinent to the birthing family;
  3. facilitate the establishment of a mutually satisfying feeding relationship;
  4. apply a problem solving approach to the care of the puerperal woman and her baby;
  5. utilise the concepts of health promotion and education in the planning of care within the context of the family unit according to age, well being, socio-cultural background and environment;
  6. foster a multidisciplinary team approach.
