Community Approaches to Care

10 hours tutorials, 30 hours other (LearnJCU) (Townsville, Cairns, Mount Isa campus). Semester 2.

Available to students enrolled in level 3 of the Bachelor of Nursing Science.

Community-based nursing offers the nursing students an opportunity to extend their knowledge in a practice area. Content will be focused on nursing in the community context. A range of community practice areas will be explored. These may include domiciliary nursing, substance abuse nursing, forensic nursing, occupational health nursing and palliative care nursing.

Learning Objectives:

  1. compare and contrast nursing in community and hospital contexts;
  2. outline the advantages of working within a multidisciplinary team;
  3. discuss a specific area of contemporary community nursing care;
  4. demonstrate the use of evidence-based practice in nursing care in the community;
  5. describe the continuum of care between hospital and community.

On-course assessment – assignment 1 (40%); assignment 2 (60%). Assessment in this subject may be revised for 2003.
