Mechanical Design and Experimentation

Townsville HECS Band 2

78 hours lectures, tutorials, seminars, field trips, practicals or workshops. Semester 2.

This subject focuses on the design of sugar milling equipment and prepares students for laboratory/factory experimentation.

Section A: Sugar milling theory. Design in accordance with standards. Legal and ethical machine safety requirements. Detailed investigation of a selected design problem related to a sugar factory environment. Topics will be drawn from the following areas: acoustics, dynamics, machine element design, solid mechanics and the design of thermal and fluid machinery.

Section B: Design of experiments and analysis of data. A short-term group-focused project.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce students to the use of standards in design;
  2. to promote student awareness of legal and ethical machine safety requirements;
  3. to reinforce material from a number of areas of mechanical engineering and to develop design skills specific to these areas;
  4. to introduce students to sugar milling theories, design of experiments and data analysis;
  5. to enhance communication skills – written and oral.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
