Computational Mechanics

Townsville HECS Band 2

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials, seminars, field trips, practicals and workshops. Semester 1.

Concepts and applications of finite element methods. principles of concurrent engineering – solid modelling. Development of equilibrium equations for quasistatic problems. Stationary principles. Weighted residual methods. Description of element types. Topics in structural mechanics including multi-disciplinary applications. Modelling strategy. An introduction to non-linear methods.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide students with a modern perspective on concurrent engineering;
  2. to introduce students to fundamental and practical concepts in finite element methods;
  3. to improve communication skills – oral and written through assessable group and individual project work and presentations.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
