Introduction to Emergency Medicine

Townsville HECS Band 3

13 hours lectures, 39 hours guided learning sessions, 13 hours synthesising sessions. Full year.

This subject will be a basic level introduction to emergency medicine, emphasising the scientific and medical rationale for treating some conditions on an emergency basis and the basic principles involved.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand the basic principles of diagnosis and management of urgent and acute medical problems;
  2. understand the interrelationships between community, general practitioners, ambulance and other paramedical services, social workers etc and A/E services;
  3. assess at a basic level patients with urgent problems and elicit a history of acute disease;
  4. formulate a hypotheses of diagnosis, an appropriate plan of management, investigations and emergency treatment;
  5. develop respect for the importance of accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment that recognise the importance of alleviating suffering and pain safely and with compassion;
  6. display a commitment to the relief of pain and suffering, including self inflicted illnesses.

Assessment by end-of-year integrated examination which will consist of a written component (67%) and a practical component (33%). Students will also be required to undertake informal on-course assessment tasks.
