Infectious Diseases

This subject will focus on the core knowledge of microbiology, including the structure and replication of bacteria and viruses, the pathogenesis of bacterial disease and the basic diagnostic methods in microbiology. Students will learn the infectious diseases of the organ systems, their epidemiology, microbial therapies and public health implications.
Learning Objectives:
- an understanding of the aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and control of the important infectious diseases as they affect the different organ systems and their role in the community;
- an understanding of the spread of infectious disease in the community and of the methods used for the control of these infections;
- ability to undertake and an understanding of simple procedures for the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases;
- awareness of the contagious nature of infectious disease and the need for strict cross infection control;
- empathy with those suffering from infectious disease.
Assessment by end-of-year integrated examination which will consist of a written component (67%) and a practical component (33%). Students will also be required to undertake informal on-course assessment tasks.
