Minor Project and Proposal (Tropical Marine Ecology and Fisheries Biology)

Townsville HECS Band 2

Semester 1 or 2 or full year.

Candidates aspiring to the MSc by Research, who are enrolled in the GDipResMeth, GCertResMeth or the MAppSc may spend approximately eight weeks collecting data as a small discrete project that is generally related to or will be encompassed within the MSc project. For example, candidates may trial and evaluate techniques to be used in the MSc thesis project, collect data to evaluate a sampling program which is continued in the thesis project, or collect data on one aspect of a broader topic that will provide a foundation upon which to frame the broader questions. The topic will be selected after consultation with appropriate supervisor(s) and the Course Coordinator. Candidates will be required to write up the results of their research in the form of a scientific paper. The project report should include critical appraisal of the objectives, methodology, results and future directions of the project. In addition, candidates will write a formal research proposal for the MSc thesis project. The proposal will take the form of a standard application for research funding and outline the aims and significance of the research, research plan, timetable, budget and budget justification.
