Available to all level 1 students although a quota applies and preference will be given to LLB students.
An introduction to the role played by legal institutions such as the judiciary, the jury system, the legal profession and the courts, within the jurisprudential and constitutional framework of the Australian legal system; access to justice including a module on Indigenous Australians and the law; introduction to international law and human rights; introduction to legal theory through the study of legal liberalism and feminist legal theories.
Learning Objectives:
- to achieve a sound level of understanding in relation to the present legal and constitutional framework of the Australian legal system;
- to promote an understanding of the role of the law and the legal system in contemporary Australian society;
- to encourage awareness and critical analysis of the wider philosophical basis underpinning the law and the legal system;
- to encourage students to critically examine the impact of the law and the legal system on the range of people making up Australian society;
- to inspire critical thought and analysis on a wide range of substantive legal issues.
Assessment by final examination and on-course assessment.
