Advanced Geographic Information Systems

10 hours lectures, 70 hours of supervised laboratory work. July block mode.

This subject focuses on integrating students’ practical skills and conceptual knowledge of GIS towards building a GIS “from scratch” to address a real world regional environmental issue.

Learning Objectives:

  1. work as a team to develop a GIS from start to finish;
  2. practice basic skills in data creation, quality control and management;
  3. build valuable problem solving and trouble-shooting abilities;
  4. interpret the project findings in a real world context;
  5. explore the implications of the project methods and results in a broader GIS theoretical context.

Assessment by training exercises (20%); discussion questions (10%); team report (30%); individual report (30%); literature review (10%).
