Visual Communication Study 1

13 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

An introduction to graphic design and illustration theory and practice. Students will undertake a series of lectures, tutorials and practical exercises designed to develop a broad understanding of the function, philosophy and role of graphic design and illustration in contemporary society. Students will develop an expertise in a range of design related skills and technologies and will examine several concept building techniques that underpin the professional practice of visual communication. Practical exercises will introduce students to fundamental aspects of: typography, pre-press, production, corporate identity, image development, illustration and visualisation skills. Studies will also include exploration of a number of illustration fields.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate a basic understanding of traditional and digital pre-press processes and apply this knowledge in the formulation of design work;
  2. utilise available computer software and information resources at a basic level for creative, research and technical purposes;
  3. produce effective, limited colour graphical symbols, icons and logos;
  4. have a working knowledge of traditional techniques and media;
  5. become familiar with a more comprehensive range of illustration fields;
  6. produce effective full colour drawings and illustrations for publication.

Assessment by end of year examination (20%); three practical assignments (60%); visual journal (20%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject unless prior arrangement has been made with the lecturer and academic adviser or Head of College.
