Digital Design for Mutimedia 1

13 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

A key aspect of this subject will be the elaboration of a systematic approach to creative problem solving and concept encompassing such processes as semiotic analysis, design synectics, lateral thinking and brainstorming. Through a series of practical exercises students will be asked to solve communication problems using both verbal and visual answers presented through both traditional layout and digital production techniques.

This subject examines issues relating to multimedia planning including: project management and the development of flowcharts; instructional/interface design and human/computer interaction and response; the development of multimedia targeting specific markets; client meetings and defining project parameters; introduction to the collection of resources including image input, video capture, image scanning, text formatting; and concept building and copywriting for multimedia productions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. apply appropriate and creative design solutions to given problems and follow these solutions through several production phases in a manner suited to the selected production process;
  2. utilise available computer software and information resources at an appropriate level for creative, research and technical purposes;
  3. analyse and respond via appropriate design for specific markets;
  4. create suitable flowcharts and storyboards to explain student’s vision;
  5. use a range of technologies to enter resources including digital cameras and scanners;
  6. extract and reformat resources from existing digital documents.

Assessment by four practical assignments (total 80%); research seminar (10%); participation (10%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject.
