Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

Staff: Ms K Carter.

This subject introduces students to the hardware, software and production processes used in the contemporary design studio and in the pre-press and digital production environment. Students learn the fundamentals of how computers work, examine Macintosh and Windows based operating systems and learn how to manage and structure their work. Students are introduced to several word processing, vector drawing and bitmap editing programs in current industry use and learn how these programs inter-relate at several levels. Troubleshooting, scanning, problem solving and systems management issues, including font management, file transfer, virus protection and internet use are covered. Students learn how to access current design and production related information and resources using a variety of communications media.

Learning Objectives:

  1. familiarity with Macintosh and Windows operating systems;
  2. familiarity with a range of hardware and software used in the design studio and in the production of print and screen ready artwork;
  3. ability to produce text, graphics and images using several key industry standard programs and save these in appropriate formats for further use;
  4. achieve a suitable level of technical proficiency in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting personal computer systems;
  5. awareness of the rate of technological change and development of capacities to respond in an appropriate manner;
  6. ability to access a broad range of information and resources related to design and communications based computing activities.

Assessment by four major practical assignments (100%). Attendance of less than 80% at practical workshops will render students ineligible for assessment unless prior written approval has been obtained from the lecturer, academic adviser or Head of College.
