Literature Review and Proposal

Townsville, Cairns HECS Band 2

Semester 1 and 2.

Available to Graduate Diploma of Science and Master of Applied Science candidates.

Staff: Mr P Valentine (Protected Area Management); Dr E Gyuris (Natural Resource Management); Dr D King (Tropical Urban and Regional Planning); Professor D Gillieson (GIS).

Students will undertake a literature review on a topic selected with their supervisor(s) and the Course Coordinator. The topic should be pertinent to their minor and/or major projects. The review should be a critical appraisal of the objectives, methodologies and results of previous research relating to the topic (maximum 5,000 words). Students are also required to write a formal research proposal for their dissertation or thesis (maximum 3,000 words). The proposal will take the form of a standard application for research funding and outline the aims and significance of the research, research plan, time table, budget and justification.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop student’s capacity to design a research project;
  2. to develop a critical approach to the reading and interpretation of research publications.

Assessment by literature review and proposal (100%).
