Engineering Project Management *

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials and seminars. Semester 1.

Nature of contemporary engineering projects; project life cycle and phases; project organisation and the project manager; activity networks; time management; cost management; physical resource management; human resource management; quality management; contract management; project monitoring, information and control systems; case studies.

Learning Objectives:

  1. learn to make conscious use of systems thinking, approaches and concepts;
  2. develop an attitude for dealing with complexity and uncertainty;
  3. learn the tools and concepts relevant to organising, planning and managing engineering projects;
  4. appreciate the relevance and applicability of these tools to a range of engineering management problems;
  5. learn to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution;
  6. advance effective oral and written communication skills;
  7. understand professional and ethical responsibilities.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
