Load flow and fault analysis, economic operation of power systems, power system reliability evaluation, power system stability and protection. Alternative methods of generation, demand side management, the role of power systems within the deregulated energy market. Power electronic devices. High power, variable speed DC and AC motor drives and controllers. High power inverters and switching power supplies.
Learning Objectives:
- competently use commercial software packages for loadflow and fault analysis;
- understand the analytical techniques used for power system operation and planning purposes;
- understand the properties and behaviour of power electronic devices;
- demonstrate an understanding of power electronic switching circuits and their applications to variable speed electrical machines, power supplies and inverters.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
