Research Methodologies in Education

Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Honours).

This subject can be undertaken either as an introduction to the honours program or as a research elective. It provides an overview of the range of research methodologies used in educational research. Its purposes are: to give students some knowledge of and competence in a range of research methods; to enable students to understand the relations between theoretical and philosophical assumptions and different approaches to research; to enable students to learn how to ask research questions and to plan how to answer them; to plan their own research project in consultation with their pro tem supervisor and to write and present their research proposal, including, if relevant a pilot study, and the forms for ethics approval.

Learning Objectives:

  1. a critical understanding of the nature and purposes of major approaches to educational research;
  2. an understanding of the potential applications of these approaches to education problems;
  3. a familiarity with basic research methods and ethics in educational inquiry;
  4. the ability to plan a research project.

Assessment by workshop participation (40%); research proposal or project (60%).
