Educational Foundations

This subject introduces a range of theoretical approaches to the study of the practices of education with a particular focus on teachers’ work. Topics include access, participation and outcomes in Australian education; literacies, discourse and power in education in relation to individual and cultural differences and child and adolescent development.

Learning Objectives:

  1. examine relationships among school contexts, educational policies/philosophies and teachers’ work;
  2. examine the relations among literacies, discourses and power in educational settings particularly as they relate to gender, class and rurality;
  3. examine theories of learning, childhood and adolescence and their educational implications.

Assessment by child study (35%); seminar presentation and defence (25%); presentation and defence of written assignment (40%).
