Third Year Professional Experience

Townsville, Cairns, External HECS Band 1

6 hours lectures, 125 hours field work. Semester 2 (Townsville and Cairns campus); Semester 2 External RATEP students only.

Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education.

Staff: Ms A Hill (Townsville campus); Dr P Matters (Cairns campus).

This subject is part of the developmental curriculum for professional experience within the BEd program. In schools and centres relevant to their specialist sector (Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary) students will complete three weeks in the semester, in Townsville (RATEP students) with an option for rural sites (internal students only). In addition, students will also develop an understanding of the important link between the work of educators and a range of community services.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of learner diversity through the development of a learner profile;
  2. plan, manage, teach and evaluate sequences of lessons to achieve negotiated learning outcomes;
  3. successfully complete a short continuous block of teaching;
  4. develop and use an observation schedule to improve management of learning environment;
  5. demonstrate a commitment to improve language and literacy skills for teaching;
  6. contribute to the provision of an education community service.

Assessment by satisfactory completion of 75 hours of professional experience in a school setting (50%); submission of plan and certified log of 50 hours of voluntary community service (50%).
