Inquiries into Secondary Learning and Teaching

Townsville HECS Band 1

13 hours lectures, 26 hours workshops/seminars, 25 hours of professional experience. Semester 1.

Available to level 3 Bachelor of Education (Secondary) students.

This subject further develops preservice teachers’ basic professional knowledge. The subject will consolidate students’ knowledge of classroom planning with particular emphasis upon longer term planning and classroom evaluation. A second component will introduce students to specific models of classroom management with the view to refining individual’s theory of practice and classroom decision making.

Learning Objectives:

  1. apply educational planning and evaluation skills to classroom practice;
  2. acquire an understanding of the learning needs of adolescent students;
  3. ability to articulate an initial personal framework of classroom management as part of the social context of schooling;
  4. work effectively with colleagues to develop a personal practical theory of teaching;
  5. ability to reflect critically on professional issues.

Assessment by three short reflective topics (40%); final examination (60%); satisfactory completion of 25 hours of professional experience.
