Secondary Music Curriculum

Townsville HECS Band 1

13 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials, 13 hours workshops. Semester 1.

Available to students with BMus or equivalent music degree or students at level 3 of the BMus-BEd. Also available as an elective subject to BEd students with lecturer approval. Graduate BEd students are required to take this subject with or before if it is their first teaching area. It is recommended to be taken before if it is their second teaching area.

The subject comprises two strands: a critical study of selected music education philosophies, theories and methodologies of the 20th and 21st centuries and issues related to their implementation; and a study of the Queensland music syllabus for Years 1-10, associated music planning and assessment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand and critically reflect on philosophies, theories, methodologies and issues related to music education in the compulsory years of schooling, particularly secondary school;
  2. understand the underlying assumptions and critically reflect on the structure and approaches associated with the Queensland music curricula;
  3. develop skills in the planning, implementation and management of classroom music;
  4. develop skills in music assessment and its communication.

Assessment by examination and/or class tests (40%); assignment (40%); presentation(s) (20%).
