Secondary Health & Physical Education Curriculum

13 hours lectures, 26 hours workshops/seminars. Semester 1.
Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Graduate Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Graduate BEd students are required to take this subject with or before if it is their first teaching area. It is recommended to be taken before if it is their second teaching area.

Secondary Health & Physical Education Curriculum provides an introduction to HPE in the middle schooling years. This subject will introduce the new HPE syllabus and the theoretical, sociocultural and pedagogical aspects that have underpinned its development, structure and implementation.
Learning Objectives:
- be able to critically reflect HPE as a Key Learning Area (KLA);
- be able to develop an understanding of the philosophical basis of the HPE syllabus and be able to apply this to the teaching of HPE in the middle school;
- be able to design engaging, effective and theoretically sound learning experiences for middle school HPE that promote maximum participation and are supportive of student social justice, equity and diversity;
- be able to apply inquiring, cooperative and independent approaches to planning and teaching;
- be able to critically reflect on and plan for continuous improvement in the teaching of HPE.
Assessment by curriculum folio (50%); micro-teaching activity (30%); group discussion workshops (20%).
