Secondary Mathematics Curriculum

Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Graduate Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Graduate BEd students are required to take this subject with or before if it is their first teaching area. It is recommended to be taken before if it is their second teaching area.

This subject introduces students to the field of mathematics education. Topics include: the nature of mathematics and mathematical thinking, influences on school mathematics including syllabus developments, developing and maintaining a classroom for learning mathematics, planning mathematics lessons, selecting and developing classroom resources and assessment practices in mathematics.
Learning Objectives:
- construct and reflect on students’ own theoretical framework for the teaching of secondary mathematics within the context of the theories and practices which are seen to be effective in encouraging and facilitating the learning of mathematics;
- apply this framework to the specific content areas of the current syllabus documents in use in Years 8-10 of Queensland schools;
- construct, critique and administer a wide variety of different modes of assessment;
- evaluate resources and technological innovations which relate to the secondary mathematics classroom;
- critique and reflect on recent developments in secondary mathematics education in Australia and overseas.
Assessment by unit plan (50%); poster presentation (10%); seminar presentation and defence (40%).
