Mathematics Education for Early Childhood

26 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials. Semester 1.
Compulsory for all undergraduate and graduate BEd programs in early childhood education.

This subject has been designed to equip preservice teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics to young children in the new millenium.
Learning Objectives:
- demonstrate an understanding of the learning processes used by young children of different socio-cultural backgrounds in learning mathematics;
- demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just mathematics curricula for young learners;
- evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to young children’s learning, especially in pre-number and early number programs;
- explore ways of organising the learning environment to ensure effective learning and teaching;
- construct and articulate a personal philosophy regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics in the new millenium.

Critique of an article from a professional journal (15%); quiz on workshop activities (20%); tutorial presentation (25%); two-hour examination (40%).
Cairns
Tutorial attendance and participation (20%); Research in Teaching/Learning Mathematics (35%); two-hour examination (45%).
