Advanced Techniques in Mining and Exploration Geology *

Townsville HECS Band 2

90 hours lectures, 10 hours practicals, 10 hours workshops/seminars. April block mode.

Available to students enrolled in MAppSc Mining amp; Exploration Geology, National Geoscience Masters in Economic Geology and Graduate Diploma of Science in Economic Geology.

Staff: Dr S Dominy, Dr T Blenkinsop, Professor N Oliver, Dr T Baker.

The analysis of orebody geometry and architecture based on surface and subsurface mapping; drill core data; controlling rock structures; ore associations and alteration patterns. Prospectivity analysis relevant to exploration.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop enabling skills to interpret geological data relevant to the geometry, potential distribution, location and nature of mineable mineralisation;
  2. to develop an understanding of the challenges and outcomes of mining analysis;
  3. to develop skills to optimise exploration and mining programs using geological data.

Assessment by seminar presentation (25%); seminar extended report (25%); in-course assessment (50%).
