Mineral Resources and their Genesis

An outline of the distribution and abundance of Earth resources in the form of metalliferous ores, industrial minerals and fossil fuels. Genesis of major metalliferous ore types. Elements of resource evaluation, extraction and processing in the context of national and international environmental and socio-economic considerations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to gain an informed perspective of global natural resources, Australia and Queensland’s resource based economies and the socio-economic impacts;
  2. to gain an understanding of the mechanisms by which mineral resources form.

Assessment by a three-hour theory examination (50%); written report and seminar presentation (20%); tutorial and practical tasks (30%).
