Stratigraphy and Sedimentary Geology

Townsville HECS Band 2

24 hours lectures, 36 hours practicals (including 4 field trips). Semester 1

Staff: Dr P Hearty, Professor R Henderson.

This subject will provide a strong base in the sedimentary processes that dominate in a variety of environments including reef, coastal, fluvial, glacial and periglacial, aeolian and lacustrine. The subject will emphasise process, facies, time, sedimentary structures, grain compositions, textures, diagenesis and environmental factors in both modern and ancient contexts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to appreciate the principles of stratigraphy;
  2. to provide a foundation in sedimentary processes related to several diverse environments for both geology majors and students of other natural and environmental science disciplines;
  3. to examine the physical and biological context and occurrence of sedimentary facies and the mechanisms responsible for formation, transport and deposition of the sediments they contain;
  4. to provide the basic knowledge of the materials and techniques of relevance in sedimentology and sedimentary geology.

Assessment by a two-and-a-half hour written examination (50%); performance in practical courses and field trips (25%); written results of an independent field project (25%).
