Introductory Earth Science

This subject concentrates on the rocks and minerals of the Earth’s crust and the processes involved in their formation. Topics include an introduction to the origin of the Earth, its structure and the processes of plate tectonics. The recognition of the common minerals of the Earth’s crust and their structures. The recognition of the common igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and the processes involved in their formation. Weathering processes and soil formation. An introduction to the geological evolution of the Australian continent.
Learning Objectives:
- to provide students with an overview of the Earth in terms of its composition, systems and processes;
- to introduce students to the systematic study and recognition of common rocks and minerals;
- to introduce students to the nature and effects of geological hazards.
Assessment by practical work and field exercises (50%); assignments and a written examination (50%).
