Introduction to Structural Design

Townsville HECS Band 2

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials and practicals. Semester 2.

Introduction to structural behaviour and form; the place of analysis in design process using examples of beams and frames; relationship between bending moment and deflected shapes; approximate analysis of indeterminate structures; introduction to working stress and limit state designs; dead loads; live loads; wind loads; an introduction to the use of design codes; design of steel members (tension, compression and flexural members) and their connections; design of timber members and their connections; introduction to civil engineering drawing.

Learning Objectives:

  1. have a ‘structural feel’ and appreciation for the importance of load path, deflected shape and approximate analysis;
  2. become familiar with the Australian Codes of Practice in the field of structural engineering;
  3. ability to understand design problem identification;
  4. ability to design some individual structural elements.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
