Introduction to Database Principles

The primary aims are to provide the student with an understanding of the importance of database technology in today’s society and how they can use this technology to manage their own data requirements. The subject will include a detailed discussion of the database design and the relational database model.
Learning Objectives:
- describe the features of a database and a database management system;
- describe the relational database model, its features and their rationale;
- formulate queries in SQL;
- understand the database development process;
- model a database using the entity-relationship model;
- use the techniques of normalisation and describe their basis;
- implement a database design as a relational database using Access.
Assessment in this subject involves significant on-course assessment including assignments and tests and an examination at the end of the semester. The full details of the assessment are handed out to students in the class in the first week of the semester in which the subject is offered and posted on the Web.
