Bioprocess Engineering

Townsville HECS Band 2

26 hours lectures, 26 hours tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Available to level 4 chemical engineering students.

Important industrial fermentation and microbial processes; biochemical and molecular biological concepts reviewed; enzyme kinetics; microbial growth and fermentation kinetics; batch, fed-batch and continuous culture modelling; aeration and mass transfer; immobilised cell culture; operation, monitoring and control of fermentation systems; downstream processing; bioprocess design and economics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce students to the industrial applications of bioprocess engineering;
  2. to provide students with a sound technical basis in bioprocess engineering;
  3. to gain an appreciation of some typical bioprocess systems, such as waste water treatment and industrial fermentation.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
