Available to students within BSc or BAppSc programs with earth science, environmental or ecology specialisation.

Staff: Dr M Liddell.

Global element cycles; atmospheric, aquatic, terrestrial and interfacial chemistry. Analytical techniques. Hazardous wastes. Nuclear chemistry. Pollution — local and global effects.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide a general framework on the aspects of chemistry that are inherent in environmental and earth sciences;
  2. stress the role of molecular processes in global element cycles;
  3. address current understanding of the causes, effects and responses to pollution;
  4. survey of instrumental and analytical techniques appropriate to monitoring, with practical experience in the use of these methods.

Assessment by examination (55%); tutorials (5%); tests (15%); laboratory/field trips (25%).
