Embedded Systems Design

Townsville HECS Band 2

13 hours lectures, 65 hours design projects, tutorials, demonstrations and practicals, site visits and seminars. Semester 2.

The design of microprocessor based systems for instrumentation and consumer electronics: microprocessor programming; microprocessor architecture; peripherals; interfacing techniques; assembly language programming and testing; programmable integrated circuits; computer aided design (CAD) tools for circuit schematic and printed circuit board design and manufacture; a design project to demonstrate interfacing and real time control of electro-mechanical systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understanding the hardware and software design of real time microprocessor based instrumentation and control systems;
  2. understanding of techniques for interfacing instrumentation sensors and actuators for the operation of computer controlled electro-mechanical systems;
  3. the design and construction of microprocessor based embedded systems using computer aided design tools;
  4. ability to justify the design techniques used in the design project and communicate this to others.

Assessment by design project and assignments (100%).
