Minor Project

Townsville, Cairns HECS Band 2

This subject requires six-eight weeks of directed study on a research topic during which period regular contact will be maintained with the project supervisor. Semester 1 and 2.

Available to postgraduate students enrolled in the School of Tropical Biology.

Staff: Assoc. Professor D Blair, Assoc. Professor R Coventry (Townsville campus); Assoc. Professor P Gadek (Cairns campus).

This subject constitutes a short research project of six-eight weeks duration full-time or part-time pro rata equivalent. In consultation with the Course Coordinator and an appropriate supervisor, the candidate will design a project and prepare a research proposal. Candidates will then undertake field or laboratory work in accordance with the research proposal, analyse the results and prepare a report in the form of a scientific paper.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain experience of working with an established research team which may be based inside or outside of the University;
  2. learn how to evaluate and utilise scientific literature in a research project;
  3. formulate and execute a research plan;
  4. learn how to draw appropriate conclusions from research findings;
  5. present the completed work in the form of a research report.

Assessment by completion of a research report (100%).
