Contemporary Issues in Agriculture

An independent study subject involving seminars, tutorials and library research. Semester 2.

Understanding, sustaining and using tropical environments for the production of food, fibre and shelter; tropical crops; tropical pastures; farming systems; land management; issues of concern to students.
Learning Objectives:
- to introduce students to techniques used in studies of plant and animal production with special relevance to the tropics;
- to provide training in the design of experiments and field trials in agriculture and in the analysis of results;
- to develop competence in basic research techniques and research communication;
- to develop student skills in searching scientific literature, critical reading, writing and seminar presentation with emphasis on topics relevant to tropical agriculture.
Continuous assessment of performance in tutorials, practice sessions, assignments and seminar presentations. Assessment by performance in six written assignments and four seminars derived from the assignments. Off-campus students may undertake more written assignments and fewer seminars by negotiation with the Course Co-ordinator.
