Flowering Plants

Introduction to the biology of flowering plants. Major topics include: the structure and function of major plant organs, pollination, seed and seed dispersal, germination and establishment, with an emphasis on vegetation dynamics of plant communities, using selected Australian and North Queensland families.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to gain an understanding of the biology of angiosperms;
  2. to learn the principles of identification and identification techniques;
  3. to examine angiosperm taxonomy and speciation processes;
  4. to gain experience in basic techniques for describing plant communities.

Assessment by one two-hour theory examination (50%); one three-hour practical examination (20%); laboratory class reports (30%).
