Townsville HECS Band 2

12 hours lectures, 12 hours tutorials, 72 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Staff: Professor J Burnell.

This subject covers a broad range of state-of-the art laboratory techniques used in biochemistry and molecular biology research laboratories through both lectures and laboratory experience. Lectures will cover the use of modern techniques used in biochemistry and molecular biology and experimental design. Students will spend a minimum of six weeks laboratory time working on a major project within a research laboratory.

Learning Objectives:

  1. ensure students have first hand experience and develop skills in modern techniques used in biochemistry and molecular biology laboratories;
  2. ensure students are able to design, conduct and analyse the results of experiments;
  3. ensure students are able to reproduce experiments described in a scientific publication;
  4. ensure students are able to use the web and databases for the efficient analysis of nucleotide and protein sequences;
  5. proficient use of standard statistics and graphics software packages.

Assessment by a two-hour examination (40%); assignments and a written project report (60%).
