Theories for Social Work Practice

26 hours lectures, 24 hours tutorials or the equivalent in mixed mode on-campus delivery. Semester 2.

Available to level 3 BSW students.

This subject further explores and critically analyses the major groupings of theories within social work practice and the historical and ideological foundations of such theories are studied and compared. Students will further extend their practice philosophy and skills within these theoretical frameworks, on a foundation of social justice principles.

Learning Objectives:

  1. critically examine a wide range of social work theories;
  2. critically examine differing implications of social work theories for practice;
  3. extend practice skills and decisions based on this critique;
  4. implement/develop practice, based on social justice principles.

Assessment by written work and class presentation.
