This subject develops an understanding of the world of young people in today’s society. Students will study many aspects of young people’s lives including youth transitions, youth culture, role of family, education and training, employment and unemployment, homelessness, street kids, offending behaviours, use of substances, health and sexuality, leisure, recreation and sport and government policies that impact on youth.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate an appreciation of the utility of a systemic approach to understanding youth today;
  2. identify and have an understanding of adolescent development and youth culture;
  3. understand the choices and dilemmas that young people in Australia face in the 1990s and into the year 2000;
  4. examine ways in which society provides policy and programs for youth.

Assessment by project (50%); essay (50%).
