Ceramics Techniques 1

39 hours practicals. Semester 1.

Available to all students. This is a level 1 Bachelor of Education subject for intending early childhood/primary teachers undertaking a major/sub-major in Art.

The subject provides the opportunity for all students interested in ceramics to learn a range of practical skills, including various hand building techniques, decoration techniques, mixing and applying glazes and a selection of firing processes. Related theory will be introduced as required. A school charge will be levied upon enrolment for use of glaze materials etc.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to gain an appreciation of traditional and contemporary practices in ceramics;
  2. to develop the technical skills and competence necessary to undertake basic ceramics projects;
  3. to develop problem-solving skills to assist with creative decision-making;
  4. to demonstrate an understanding of safe work practices.

Assessment by three practical projects (30% each); research journal/visual diary (10%).
