Introduction to Visual Arts

HECS Band 1

13 hours lectures, 36 hours practicals. Semester 1.

Available to all students except BVA students, Bachelor of Education students undertaking a major/sub-major in art, or students who have completed Year 12 Art. This is a required subject for intending early childhood/primary education students who have not done Year 12 Art. Students must attend the first lecture to register for preferred practical group. (Practical sessions commence in Week 2.).

This subject focuses on developing an appreciation of the visual arts and an understanding of the role of the visual artist in the community. It examines selected aspects of contemporary arts and aims to present basic practical knowledge of two and three dimensional art processes and products.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to expand the understanding and appreciation of the visual arts;
  2. to increase the understanding and appreciation of the role of the visual artist in the community;
  3. to develop knowledge of historical and contemporary aspects of the visual arts;
  4. to develop knowledge and skills of two and three dimensional visual art processes and products;
  5. to develop knowledge and awareness of the safe use of art materials and tools.

Assessment by four practical projects (15% each); research notebook/visual diary (40%).
