Visual Arts Studies 1A

13 hours lectures, 39 hours workshops. Semester 1.

The subject is intended to enrich and deepen students’ understanding of the visual arts as great achievements and expressions of humanity. Students will be introduced to the complex cultural and historical framework of Western art and to the art of other cultures, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. A series of workshops will provide a practical application of art skills in the areas of painting, drawing and pottery.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop practical skills in a range of mediums and understand their characteristics and functions;
  2. develop a critical appreciation of the visual arts and an awareness of their social, cultural and historical context.

Assessment by written assignments; artwork; workshop participation.
