Career Development for the Future Workplace

26 hours lectures, 12 hours tutorials. Semester 2.

This subject examines the changing nature of work and employment opportunities in the emerging new economy. There is increasing recognition that individuals are likely to experience a number of career changes within their working life. This subject will examine both the practical and theoretical issues which will help individuals flourish in the new economy. Theoretical issues covered include the changing nature of work and employment; the sociological and psychological factors needed for career success; the development of ‘knowledge work’ and other issues. The practical issues covered include curriculum vitae preparation; the identification of individual generic skills and job interview skills.

Learning Objectives:

  1. examine models of the emerging new economy and the job characteristics required in traditional and new occupations;
  2. identify trends in the nature of work and the implications for career development;
  3. identify students values and interests in relation to career expectations;
  4. develop a personal development plan that maximises employment opportunity;
  5. develop a basic knowledge of the skills required for effective job interviews.

Assessment by essay (30%); tutorial participation (10%); analysis of work placement (30%); take-home examination (30%).
