An internship is a supervised semester long arrangement with a host agency that provides employment experience in such areas as a community organisation, charitable institution, government body or in the private sector. While unpaid, it provides an opportunity for students to put to use existing skills and apply and extend their discipline knowledge in an applied setting.

Duties will be performed for the agency under the supervision of the subject coordinator(s) and the agency supervisor. The intern will also be evaluated by both the subject coordinator(s) and the agency supervisor. Fortnightly workshops will be scheduled for all interns to participate in sharing their experiences and challenges. This will provide an opportunity to discuss respective internship sites, evaluate the internship experience and discuss broad issues common to the group.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate existing research, writing and communication skills in an applied setting;
  2. apply discipline knowledge and practice;
  3. develop analytical and critical skills in understanding organisational structure and function;
  4. develop and demonstrate professional attitudes in a work setting.

Assessment by a journal (20%); research paper (40%); brief seminar presented to other interns at the end of the semester (10%); mid-term and final evaluation by the site supervisor (30%).
