Fundamentals of Social Research Methods

The purpose of this subject is to introduce students to the basic processes of research as practised in the social and behavioural sciences. It will provide an overview of the various research methods used to investigate human social and individual behaviour and the techniques used to gather such information. Ways of exploring, describing and summarising data will be central to this process. The underlying principles of science and logic are emphasised, with special attention to implementing and evaluating research.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand the scientific process and how it is applied in the study of human behaviour and society;
  2. gain knowledge and understanding of the main types of research and their proper application;
  3. acquire practical experience in conducting, analysing and interpreting research.

Assessment by written assignment (25%); practical work (25%); final examination (50%).
