Working With Clients

Available to MPsych students or other suitably qualified persons with the permission of the course coordinator.

This subject provides experience in the communication and counselling micro skills necessary to work effectively with clients. Topics include interviewing, history taking and case formulation. Issues of client reluctance and resistance are also addressed. Other topics are the professional practice of psychology, including professional ethics and legal considerations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. attain practical communication and counselling microskills;
  2. an understanding of client reluctance and resistance and professionally appropriate strategies;
  3. an awareness of the student’s own strengths and weaknesses in working with clients.

Assessment by video of microskills usage with peer as client (50%); class presentation and written paper (50%).
